The Vietnamese language

Vietnamese is the 17th most spoken language in the world. It belongs to the Austro-Asiatic language group and is a tonal, monosylabic language spoken as a mother tongue by approximately 80 million people. The language is most closely related to Khmer but is heavily influenced by Chinese, French and English. Vietnamese is written using a 29 letter alphabetical system. However, the accent of Vietnamese varies from province to province. Besides Vietnamese, around 50 other languages are spoken by ethnic minorities. English, French, Russian, Chinese and Japanese are also popular in bigger cities. Each region and province of Vietnam has its distinct dialect. Even though grammatical differences are negligible, Vietnamese varies greatly in tone, accents and vocabulary. Vietnam has 53 other ethnic groups besides Viet, each with their own languages and some with their own written form.

Things to consider when translating into Vietnamese

You may be surprised to learn that Vietnamese is linguistically closer to Japanese than to European languages, or to Arabic. It is substantially different from English in terms of grammatical structure, where one Vietnamese word can have more than 15 suffixes expressing case, tense and modality. Vietnamese word order is much more flexible than English, which can become source of ambiguity for translators.
