The Turkish language

Turkish is the seventh most widespread language in the world. It belongs to the Ural-Altaic group and has an affinity with the Fin-Hungarian languages, as well as Japanese and Korean. Turkish is written with the Latin alphabet and is spoken by over 80 million people in Turkeyas well as Iraq, Greece, Cyprus, Bulgaria and Albania. It is also spoken by several million immigrants, particularly in Germany, estimated at approximately 200 million worldwide. But did you know that the English language contains many words that originate from the Turkish language? They include caftan, caviar, tulip, lackey and yoghurt!

Things to consider when translating into Turkish

You may be surprised to learn that Turkish is linguistically closer to Japanese than to European languages, or to Arabic. It is substantially different from English in terms of grammatical structure, where one Turkish word can have more than 15 suffixes expressing case, tense and modality. Turkish word order is much more flexible than English, which can become source of ambiguity for translators. The basic word order of Turkish is Subject Object Verb. Turkish has no noun classes or grammatical gender.
