The Turkish language
Turkish is the official language of Turkey and is one of the official languages of Cyprus.Ã, It belongs to the Ural-Altaic family of languages, which also includes Finnish, Hungarian, Kazak and Mongolian.Ã, In the 1920s, the establishment of the Turkish state brought about the need for substantial language reform. Turkish was declared the nation's official language and efforts were made to purge it of words borrowed from Arabic and Persian and to replace them Turkish. The Arabic alphabet was replaced with theÃ, modified Latin script.
But did you know that the English language contains many words that originate from the Turkish language? They include caftan, caviar, tulip, lackey and yoghurt!
Things to consider when translating into Turkish
You may be surprised to learn that Turkish is linguistically closer to Japanese than to European languages, or to Arabic. It is substantially different from English in terms of grammatical structure, where one Turkish word can have more than 15 suffixes expressing case, tense and modality. Turkish word order is much more flexible than English, which can become source of ambiguity for the translator who also has to rebuild every sentence from scratch.Ã, The basic word order of Turkish is Subject Object Verb. Turkish has no noun classes or grammatical gender. |
