The Japanese language

Japanese, spoken by over 130 million people,is believed to be linked to the Altaic language family, which includes Turkish, Koreanand Mongolianbut also shows similarities to Austronesian languages such as Polynesian. Basic Japanese grammar is relatively simple. In comparison with other languages, Japaneseuses relatively few sounds, and pronunciation poses little problems to most learners. The Japanese language employs an extensive system of politeness and honorific markers. Did you know that approximately 80% of all English wordsoriginate from other languages? Linguistic borrowing took place over many centuries, whenever English speakers have come into contact with other cultures through wars, colonisation, trade, immigration or travel. While English has borrowed has acquired many words from Asia, many of which no longer seem foreign. The Japanese language has loaned a number of words, including honcho, karaoke, ninja, rickshaw, soy and tofu.

Things to consider when translating into Japanese

Typesetting Japanese text poses no problems, although occasionally space issues can arise as Japanese translations often take up more space than the equivalent English text. Japanese text can run either vertically or horizontally, with the latter more common these days. Although Japanese was traditionally written from top to bottom and from the right side of the page to the left, most Japanese material produced in foreign countries is now written with the same orientation as English. It is also almost always written in a fully-justified style. Japanese does not generally have spaces between characters and words and is mostly written as a continuous string of characters. In general, the text translated from English to Japanese will expand by about 20%.
