The Indonesian language

Indonesian, also called Bahasa Indonesia (the language of Indonesia) is a member of the Austronesian family of languages. It is spoken by about 200 million people in Indonesia and is a working language in East Timor. Indonesian is a mother tongue by only a small proportion of Indonesia's population. In a nation that is rich with more than 300 native languages and a vast array of ethnic groups, the use of standard Indonesian is an essential means of communication. Use of the national language is apparent in the media, government bodies, schools, work and in many other formal situations. The standard, correct version of the Indonesian language is rarely used in daily communication. Standard Indonesian can be found in books and newspapers, on television and radio but few native Indonesian speakers use completely formally standard language in their daily conversations. Orangutang, tapir, satay, bamboo, rattan, amok and gingham and sarong are just a few of the words of Malay/Indonesian origins that have made it into the English language.

Things to consider when translating into Indonesian

It is said that Indonesian is one of the easiest languages in the world. It is is written in Latin script and is phonetic. As Indonesian tends to be more wordy than English, with some of the concepts non-existent in the Indonesian business culture, there tends to be more words in Indonesian when translated from English. It is wise to allow for language expansion, especially when translating brochures, websites and marketing materials.
