The German language

Over 100 million people speak German as their native language. German is the official language of Germany, Austria and Liechtenstein, and is also one of the national languages of Switzerland and Luxembourg  Small groups of people who speak German also live in various southern and eastern European countries, and many people learn German in schools. Emigration has also spread the German language to many other parts of the world. There large pockets of German speaking communities in the U.S., Canada, South America, South Africa, and Australia. The language of Beethoven, Mozart, Freud, Nietzsche and Einstein, German is second only to English in the field of scientific publications. Every tenth book published in the world is in the German language. For many years, experts and politicians discussed the revision of the German rules of spelling. The debate drew widespread public interest and the new spelling system was finally implemented in1998. The original 212 spelling rules were reduced to 112, and the rules of punctuation were cut down from 52 to 9. Most official sources had switched to the new spellings in 2005, however many other sources, such as media, continue to use the traditional spelling. English has borrowed many words from German: aspirin, kindergarten, sauerkraut, deli, diesel, hamburger and kitsch to name just a few!

Things to consider when translating into German

One of the most important factors to be aware of when undertaking English to German translation is the strict nature of German grammar. German is fifth most used language on the Internet, with an estimated 58 million users, and the most common language spoken in the EU. English, translated into German, expands by about 10% so you are likely to end up with more text than what you started with, and - potentially - a ruined layout. As many German words are much longer than English, narrow columns may pose a problem. Most English fonts can be used for typesetting in German.
