The German language

Over 100 million people speak German as their native language. German is the official language of Germany, Liechtenstein and Austria and is also one of the national languages of Switzerland. English has borrowed many words from German: aspirin, kindergarten, sauerkraut, deli, diesel, hamburger and kitsch to name just a few!

Things to consider when translating into German

German is fifth most used language on the Internet, with an estimated 58 million users, and the most common language spoken in the EU. English, translated into German, expands by about 10% so you are likely to end up with more text than what you started with, and - potentially - a ruined layout. As many German words are much longer than English, narrow columns may pose a problem. Most English fonts can be used for typesetting in German.
