The Chinese language
Chinese is the most common language of the world and actually consists of a large number of dialects which share a written language but are mutually unintelligible when spoken. Saying that someone speaks Chinese isÃ, like saying someone speaks European. Mandarin Chinese is the official language of the People's Republic of China and Taiwan, and it is the most widely-spoken form of Chinese. Other important linguistic groups include Cantonese, Wu, Xiang, Hakka, Min, and Gan. Chinese belongs to the Sino-Tibetan language family, which also includes Tibetan, Karen, and Lolo-Burmese. Its written form was devised over 4000 years ago. The English language contains many words borrowed from Chinese, including ketchup, silk, soy, tea, tycoon and typhoon!
Things to consider when translating into Chinese
Chinese is a symbolic language and it comes in two written versions: Traditional and Simplified. Traditional Chinese characters have more brush strokes per character and are mainly used in Hong Kong, Macau and Taiwan.
Simplified Chinese uses less complex characters, and is mostly used in Mainland China and Singapore. The simplified characters have been gaining popularity, although traditional Chinese characters are still very widespread.
That is why it is very important to consider who your target audience is, before translating into Chinese. |
